biography:

He was born in 1935 in Castelforte (Latina). In the 1960s Antonio Di Viccaro found his dimension in society, whilst exploring with materials such as tinted stucco and pallet-knifes as means of applying the stucco to create almost monochromatic paintings.
Di Viccaro’s first works were already subject to an internal logic. He organized quadrates of color, and modulated thick layers of stucco applied metrically, so that when viewed as a whole, they would create a singular, unpredictable optic-chromatic effect. The recurrent characteristics, which emerge from the stucco, are not to be mistaken for thematic repetition, but are the result of shadows and ever-changing tensions that rise from the polychromatic stucco being applied to almost monochromatic surfaces. In the 70s he introduced color into his paintings, which presented readable landscapes showing traces of a controlled geometry and a liberal but figurative expression.
At the end of the 80s, following to his first success abroad, and after having accumulated an extensive body of work retrospective of more than 30 years - Antonio Di Viccaro devoted his studies utterly to the subject matter of color; thus evoking an evolution of style that would place him amongst the “New Landscapists”. Di Viccaro’s yarning to verify the newly adapted style, encouraged him to research new visual directions, thus implementing a new richness in his artwork that was to reconfirm the validity of his work for the future.

Antonio Di Viccaro has remained true to his style since. However, the necessity to continually increase the intensity of color and light in his paintings has led him to acquire an ever-deepening expressiveness, which enriches his perception as well as his visual language. Thus, by him utilizing the experience gained from exploring with various materials, he is capable of creating a tension that identifies the observer’s physical sensations. – Always depicted are sun-drenched landscapes, moods of the sea, and summer days bursting with color.
When painting, Di Viccaro’s reality is being translated into a construction that occupies the white space on blank canvases, whereas the harmony between form and atmosphere gives reason to their being.
However, capturing the essence of a landscape demands it being viewed objectively from various angles in order to reveal all its clandestine facets, as it is only then that an image becomes pliable for transformation into a new construction speaking of other realities. Thus, the contrived realism reflects upon an inherent truth that emerges from Antonio Di Viccaro’s perception and experience of life, implementing it into a new dimension of landscapes.
